American Space Walvis Bay is in operation since 2004 and situated at the Walvis Bay Public Library with satellite services offered at the two branch libraries. The Municipality of Walvis Bay is the host institution and strongly supports the operations of the Corner. The Municipality of Walvis Bay is one of only two local authorities in the country that fund and operates its own library service. Libraries in the country are the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, but due to under-funding and substandard service delivery, the local authority manages its own libraries. The Space is a good fit for the Walvis Bay Public Library and complements its services and audience.
Programming focus is Youth Entrepreneurship; Women’s Issues; Children’s English Literacy; and STEM. Target audience for the space:
- Primary school students
- Secondary school students
- Out of school youth
- Women
- STEM contacts
